What to Know About Where to Go on Vacation This Year

In Breckenridge Colorado, May is mud season. In late April that last of our snow falls, the earth rotates bringing the sun directly overhead, and the temperatures rise into the 70's. Not a good combination of events if you want to ski, unless you mud board.
As I sat in my office, pining for another day on the mountain (but not really for any more snow to fall), I wondered what other vacation destinations were doing right at the exact same moment. Were there people surfing in California, sunbathing in Florida, Ice fishing in Wisconsin, or hitting some spring skiing out east? When exactly were the best and busiest times for every region around this nation? When are the best times to take a vacation and catch a deal in the slow season? When should one not plan on taking a vacation, like December in Florida or May in Breckenridge? As I began researching some different areas around the nation I realized that many people probably have the same questions I do about where to go and when to go there. Most people vacation the same
places year after year because they "know" a certain destination, and shy away from exploration to other areas because of the unknown and the possibility of a lackluster vacation. Without thorough research for one's vacation, you could end up surfing in 40 degree water, dirt skiing, or bringing your kids to the "adult beaches". My wife will never let me live that one down. Because there are literally hundreds of different vacation destinations within just our own borders, and not very much free flowing information on all of them, I have decided to start and develop a guide for all of you out there. Because each different area has its own specific seasons and rates, I have only included a brief overview of my findings in this article. Below is a link to a more specific list of places and prices, for example-
Breckenridge, CO
Pre-Holiday (Dec 18-Dec 25).............. $350/nt
Holiday (Dec 26-Jan 03).................. $600/nt
Value (Jan 04-Feb 12).................... $350/nt
Regular (Feb 13-Apr 11................... $425/nt
Super Value (Nov 07-Dec 17 & Apr 13-18).. $255/nt
Summer (Apr 19-Nov 06)................... $165/nt
Region- Southeast- Includes Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The southeast vacation region offers overall warm weather during their summer or "peak "season, which usually lasts from mid April to early September. Most, if not all, vacations in this region are beach and ocean related (excluding Disneyworld). The closer to the mouth of the Mississippi River you get (between TX and LA), the less clear the water becomes. Summer in the sand would define this area the best. The beaches from Orange Beach, AL to the panhandle of FL have warm and clear water and seem to be the most affordable. However, watch out for jellyfish.
Region- East Coast- Included in this region are Virginia, New Jersey, Vermont, and Maine(though New York and several others will be explored later). The beach areas from Virginia to Maine all seem to have the same peak/summer season, which lasts from June until August. "The Shore" as it is called in some areas, has cooler water and darker beaches than the southeastern region. Conversely, there are several ski areas concentrated in this region as well. In Vermont, for instance, there are several large ski areas located in the central area. The ski season lasts from early December to mid April in most of the ski areas.
Region- Rocky Mountains- This area is made up of several states, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, andIdaho. All of these states have their own major ski areas that provide world class skiing and beautiful scenery. The ski season in most of these areas begins in November and ends in late April. It is important to note that the mountain regions have two separate and distinct seasons. The summer season, usually between June and August, offers rafting, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and a host of other activities that also make for a great mountain vacation.
Region- Northwest- Washington and Oregon are included in this area. These states are somewhat unique in that the have coastal areas as well as ski areas. The costal areas peak/summer season runs from May to late September. Summer activities include river and ocean fishing, hiking, biking, camping, and boating. The ski areas are mainly concentrated in the central and eastern areas of these states and the ski season goes from late November to late March.
Region- West Coast- California makes up this entire area and it is riddled from north to south with beaches. The water as well as the temperature both become warmer as you move south down the coast. The peak/summer season for most beaches occurs between June and September, but California is typically a warm and inviting place to visit year around.
Region- Smokey Mountains- Tennessee is home to a large portion of the Smokies and the main two cities are Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Within this area you will find some of the most beautiful and serene surroundings, but you are also close to very busy tourist towns. It is a wonderful combination of wilderness and city that has something for everybody. The peak season runs several months, from April through December.
If you live in one of these areas and have something to add or clarify please contact me and I will make any applicable changes. If you live in an area not included here, please don't be offended, I had to keep this article as short as possible. If you feel the area you live in is a great vacation spot, please e-mail me the details and I will be sure to include it.
