A Daytrip to Ruby Falls is Educational and Fun

When visiting the Smoky Mountains, you'll have an excellent opportunity to take in the sights, sounds and scenery. But don't forget that some interesting and fun daytrips are just around the bend. Nearby Chattanooga, TN is a perfect example. Only about 90 minutes away is an amazing underground wonder called Ruby Falls.
Centuries ago, at the base of Lookout Mountain, the entrance to a cave was discovered. It didn't take long for tales to travel far and wide about the vast caverns and huge chambers this cave held. From Native Americans of long ago to modern-day explorers: everyone is awe-struck by what lies inside the entrance.
It was Mr. Leo Lambert, however, that took it upon himself to open this marvel to the public. Beginning in 1923, he and a crew or workers began to excavate passages in the
cave. A jackhammer and an unexpected gush of air led to the discovery of gorgeous rock formations and the jewel of Lookout Mountain: Ruby Falls. (Named for his wife.)
This underground waterfall towers at 145 feet tall, gushes over 300 gallons of water per minute and is one of the largest underground falls accessible to the public. A truly magnificent sight on its own, the waterfall is only enhanced by the addition of colored lighting that can be used to add depth and interest to the cavern.
Spend the Day Exploring
The Ruby Falls tour is more than a short glimpse at an ordinary waterfall. The complete tour takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Using a paved path that stretches almost 1 mile, you'll walk along getting an up-close view of rocks and other geological formations. The highlight of your tour is a stop at Ruby Falls where you can see this giant right before your eyes.
Whether you're a nature lover who loves to explore, a teacher in need of an attention-grabbing field trip or someone who likes to discover interesting sights; Ruby Falls is an exceptional tour. And, since rain is never a factor (because you're inside a cave), you won't have to worry about cancelling plans due to inclement weather.
While you're here, take time to visit the other attractions at Lookout Mountain. Rock City was carved by nature herself and offers hours of fun and exploration. Enter through the Grand Corridor, hear the wind whistling through the Needle's Eye, make friends with some rare, white deer, traverse the swing-a-long bridge and climb Lover's Leap to see 7 states.
When you're done touring you have several options. Grab some lunch at one of the many cafes or grills at Ruby Falls and Lookout Mountain. Everything from sandwiches and wraps to burgers and dogs is available. You can also pick up some beautiful souvenirs in the gift shops. Or, if you'd prefer, ride the Incline Railway before heading back to Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge and the Smoky Mountains.
Whatever you do, be sure to bring your camera to capture all the fun. This is one daytrip you and your family will remember for years.
